This is one of my best friends, Jess. I was playing with shutter speeds and got this one of her. I can't exactly put my finger on why I like this shot so much.... I think it might be because it reminds me of college- not only because she was my roommate but also because I was using and developing my own black and white film and prints at the time. I was just getting into photography and this kind of looks like a some of my "mess ups" as I called them. While I was still learning, I had a lot of shots turn out this way.

I also think I like it because it isn't perfect. I spend so much time trying to get a "perfect" shot (technically speaking) and sometimes leave out my emotions. I tend to overlook some shots because they are slightly out of focus or the lighting wasn't quite right. Later, I'll see someone else's work that isn't perfect and I'll love it. This recently happened to me and I asked myself, "If I had taken it, would I like it as much?" Maybe... But probably not.

As I've said before, I'm always learning. My new lesson learned is that I don't always need a reason for liking something. My photography is just for me...

...for now.

  1. I love it. These are the kinds of shots I prefer, really. They show the personality of the subject perfectly! I can look at this picture and say, "She looks like my kind of girl!" :)

  2. I love this shot. I'm with you - sometimes the emotion of a shot overrides a "perfect" shot.

  4. I love it. It's not perfect?? Didn't you see the poster in the baby's room? Perfection is not attainable, but if we chase perfection we can catch excellence...and you have caught it! It's beautiful. Don't be so hard on yourself.

  5. This shot definitely does not belong in the mess ups pile! I adore the photo. Your friend looks stunning, and I just like everything about it.

  6. I like it b/c you can't see all of her face, but she's so pretty in what you can see, you want more. Like if you look hard enough you'll see more. Is this making sense?
    Anyway, you're the bomb, Pam.
